Next Steps 4 Seniors presents: What Is Senior Living?

Times have changed and so have the options for Senior Living. The nursing home where you visited your great aunt is no longer the only path for our aging elderly. Today, Senior Living includes a variety of choices from very independent (even luxurious) retirement communities to care-focused Assisted Living or Memory Care to long-term nursing facilities. These beautiful communities are private pay and no longer necessary to spend down all your resources, to age gracefully in a home-like environment.

Independent living allows seniors (generally 55+) to scale down and stay social with assurance that there are people nearby should a fall or health change occur. This is perfect when a family lives far away or the Senior relocates to be near family. Some independent living options provide services of great convenience: housekeeping, laundry, happy hours, activities, and socialization. Care plans are minimal, but might include medication reminders, personal assistance, or escorts.

Assisted Living starts to layer on more routine support for the Senior. There will be a nurse leading care, 24-hour staffing and secured access. For Seniors with limitations, this setting aids with dressing/grooming/toileting, preventing falls, limiting exertion, wheelchair access, or incontinence care.  When the natural aging process has your loved one experiencing more frequent forgetfulness, it is time to assure the Senior is having medications dispensed for them and regular reminders or escorts to meals, exercise, and activities.

Memory Care is for those Seniors who have a diagnosis of dementia (like Alzheimer’s, Lewy Body, etc.) which require more assistance & supervision. Their memory issues require 24-hour care, a 100% secured environment and even more services than Assisted Living: more safety, consistency, and more care for one on one feeding, incontinence, or wandering. These Seniors still enjoy meals, activities, and socializing in a structure that promotes independence where they are at cognitively and physically.

Yet another setting is a residential care home where all meals, medication management, activities, exercise, and care are offered to a handful of Seniors in a home-like setting, practically one-on-one care.

Long-term care facilities serve Seniors with acute aging concerns. These Seniors require assistance with many activities of daily living and likely need medical treatments under a nurse’s supervision.  Frequently referred to as “nursing homes,” many of these facilities now provide activity & exercise programs, beauty salons, and other comforts. These facilities are the only senior care that takes both private pay as well as insurance like Medicaid for payment of all services provided.
